Une d\u00e9couverte, une voix superbe, \u00e0 \u00e9couter en urgence ! R\u00e9cemment d\u00e9couverte sur la compilation Even Cowgirls Get Blues, Alela Diane<\/strong> Menig est une jeune Californienne de 23 ans dont le folk hant\u00e9 et incroyablement juste fait merveille tout au long de The Pirate\u2019s Gospel, son premier album. Son visage allong\u00e9 et rond, ses longs cheveux aux couettes brunes et ses santiags lui donnent l’allure d’une cow-girl am\u00e9rindienne. Alela Diane<\/strong> a 23 ans mais sa sensibilit\u00e9 folk est \u00e9tonnamment mature. H\u00e9riti\u00e8re de Cat Power ou Karen Dalton, la Californienne a toujours baign\u00e9 dans un milieu musical de chanson folk traditionnelle. Entre chanter dans une chorale et apprendre la guitare, la chanteuse est prise d’une envie br\u00fblante de raconter ses propres histoires.<\/p>\n

Alela Diane<\/strong> Menig, d’origine californienne, est la r\u00e9v\u00e9lation folk du moment. En s’\u00e9tourdissant des ballades qui hantent son premier album, il faut croire ce qu’on oublie trop souvent : la vraie magie se cache sans cesse derri\u00e8re la simplicit\u00e9. Cette jeune fille se sert avec justesse du prisme guitare-voix (mais quelle voix !), r\u00e9cemment repris par une sc\u00e8ne musicale de barbus habiles avec les voyages dans le temps comme Devendra Banhart. Presque rien n’ a \u00e9t\u00e9 ajout\u00e9 \u00e0 cette formule pour que l’\u00e9quilibre ne se tisse.<\/p>\n

La chanteuse \u00e9blouit avec l’essentiel : un jeu de guitare simple mais aux accords intenses et soutenus, une voix impressionnante par son m\u00e9lange de force et de douceur, des textes \u00e0 l’\u00e9criture tendre. Les arrangements reposent sur quelques notes de piano enivrantes ou sur un choeur d’enfants qui harmonise le magnifique ‘Pieces of String’. ‘The Pirate’s Gospel’ a \u00e9t\u00e9 enregistr\u00e9 par le p\u00e8re de la jeune femme dans son propre studio, et il joue d’ailleurs de la guitare sur plusieurs morceaux.<\/p>\n

Cet album intime devient encore plus sinc\u00e8re, quand sur ‘Heavy Walls<\/em>‘ la fille chante “Will I play the guitar like my father does ?<\/em>“, et que le p\u00e8re r\u00e9pond par des volutes acoustiques. Gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 ‘Oh ! My Mama’, on ne peut imaginer de berceau plus musical pour Alela, qui rend hommage par son chant \u00e0 celui de sa m\u00e8re \u00e0 “la voix de plumes”…<\/p>\n

Comme dans le mythe indien, cette “vieille \u00e2me” de seulement 23 ans laisse parler \u00e0 travers elle les fant\u00f4mes du pass\u00e9 (‘The Rifle’, ‘Foreign Tongue’). En d\u00e9coulent des histoires de racines et d’exils. Si ses parents sont \u00e0 l’origine des influences folk traditionnelles d’Alela Diane<\/strong>, celle\u2013ci r\u00e9ussit \u00e0 les transcender sans les imiter. Quatre ans apr\u00e8s l’enregistrement de ce premier album, sa voix puissante traverse enfin les oc\u00e9ans, \u00e0 sa plus grande surprise d’ailleurs, pour nous \u00e9merveiller de ses chansons tristes et belles \u00e0 la fois.<\/p>\n
