Il fut cr\u00e9\u00e9 pour \u00eatre un lieu d&#8217;exposition de l&#8217;art d&#8217;avant-garde d&#8217;artistes modernistes tels que <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Wassily Kandinsky\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wassily_Kandinsky\">Wassily Kandinsky<\/a> et <a title=\"Piet Mondrian\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piet_Mondrian\">Piet Mondrian<\/a>. L&#8217;emplacement actuel du mus\u00e9e, \u00e0 l&#8217;angle de la <abbr class=\"abbr\" title=\"Quatre-vingt-neuvi\u00e8me (huitante-neuvi\u00e8me \/ octante-neuvi\u00e8me)\">89<sup>e<\/sup><\/abbr>&nbsp;rue et de la <a title=\"Cinqui\u00e8me avenue\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cinqui%C3%A8me_avenue\">Cinqui\u00e8me avenue<\/a>, dominant <a title=\"Central Park\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Central_Park\">Central Park<\/a>, date de <a title=\"1959\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1959\">1959<\/a>, apr\u00e8s que le nouveau b\u00e2timent fut dessin\u00e9 par <a title=\"Frank Lloyd Wright\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Lloyd_Wright\">Frank Lloyd Wright<\/a>, qui d\u00e9c\u00e9da avant la fin des travaux et l&#8217;ouverture du mus\u00e9e le 21 octobre 1959.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>L&#8217;espace mus\u00e9al a une structure en h\u00e9lice. Le visiteur entre par le sommet, puis descend progressivement jusqu&#8217;au niveau du sol par une rampe l\u00e9g\u00e8rement inclin\u00e9e&nbsp;: la notion de salle d&#8217;exposition dispara\u00eet ainsi au profit d&#8217;une continuit\u00e9 de pr\u00e9sentation.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Thomas Krens\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Krens\">Thomas Krens<\/a> dirigea le mus\u00e9e entre 1988 et 2005. Il s&#8217;employa \u00e0 franchiser l&#8217;\u00e9tablissement en permettant l&#8217;ouverture d&#8217;autres centres Guggenheim dans le monde. Il chercha \u00e9galement \u00e0 \u00e9quilibrer le budget de l&#8217;institution. C&#8217;est aussi sous sa direction qu&#8217;un mini-mus\u00e9e Guggenheim ouvrit ses portes dans le quartier de <a title=\"SoHo\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SoHo\">SoHo<\/a>, au sud de <a title=\"Manhattan\" href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manhattan\">Manhattan<\/a>, mais celui-ci finit par dispara\u00eetre en 2001<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mus%C3%A9e_Solomon_R._Guggenheim#cite_note-2\">2<\/a><\/sup>. Thomas Krens chercha \u00e0 attirer le public par de grandes expositions temporaires.
